Narrative:

On a flight from bermuda dunes airport, ca to big bear airport, ca, I called big bear unicom with my position and requested a landing advisory. I was given the active runway 07 wind direction and speed and current altimeter setting. I entered a 45 degree for right-hand traffic and reported on a downwind for runway 07 at 8000'. For a reason I suddenly thought I was flying a pattern for runway 25 instead of 07 and with a startled reaction broke traffic and reentered the pattern in the opposite direction and once again called downwind for runway 07. I continued the left-hand pattern, which was now actually a pattern for runway 25. I continued my flight reporting a turn on base leg and final approach as being to runway 07, when actually I was on an approach to runway 25. On base leg I heard an aircraft call that he was preparing to depart runway 07 so as I turned what I thought was my final approach to 07 I looked for the departing aircraft but could not locate him. I slowed down my approach and continued to look for him suddenly approximately 3/4 of a mi on final I saw the aircraft departing runway 07 at 12 O'clock approximately 150' high. I turned right in a descending turn and he passed above and to my left. He reported an aircraft landing on runway 25 and I immediately acknowledged my error to unicom. I accept full responsibility for the occurrence. My embarrassment is monumental but my concern for compromising the safety factor is even erratic. I do not smoke or drink, I am not and have not been on any medication and I do not do drugs, legally or otherwise.

Title: SMA PLT MAKES WRONG DIRECTION APCH AT UNCONTROLLED FIELD. NMAC WITH DEPARTING ACFT.

Narrative: ON A FLT FROM BERMUDA DUNES ARPT, CA TO BIG BEAR ARPT, CA, I CALLED BIG BEAR UNICOM WITH MY POSITION AND REQUESTED A LNDG ADVISORY. I WAS GIVEN THE ACTIVE RWY 07 WIND DIRECTION AND SPEED AND CURRENT ALTIMETER SETTING. I ENTERED A 45 DEG FOR RIGHT-HAND TFC AND REPORTED ON A DOWNWIND FOR RWY 07 AT 8000'. FOR A REASON I SUDDENLY THOUGHT I WAS FLYING A PATTERN FOR RWY 25 INSTEAD OF 07 AND WITH A STARTLED REACTION BROKE TFC AND REENTERED THE PATTERN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AND ONCE AGAIN CALLED DOWNWIND FOR RWY 07. I CONTINUED THE LEFT-HAND PATTERN, WHICH WAS NOW ACTUALLY A PATTERN FOR RWY 25. I CONTINUED MY FLT REPORTING A TURN ON BASE LEG AND FINAL APCH AS BEING TO RWY 07, WHEN ACTUALLY I WAS ON AN APCH TO RWY 25. ON BASE LEG I HEARD AN ACFT CALL THAT HE WAS PREPARING TO DEPART RWY 07 SO AS I TURNED WHAT I THOUGHT WAS MY FINAL APCH TO 07 I LOOKED FOR THE DEPARTING ACFT BUT COULD NOT LOCATE HIM. I SLOWED DOWN MY APCH AND CONTINUED TO LOOK FOR HIM SUDDENLY APPROX 3/4 OF A MI ON FINAL I SAW THE ACFT DEPARTING RWY 07 AT 12 O'CLOCK APPROX 150' HIGH. I TURNED RIGHT IN A DESCENDING TURN AND HE PASSED ABOVE AND TO MY LEFT. HE REPORTED AN ACFT LNDG ON RWY 25 AND I IMMEDIATELY ACKNOWLEDGED MY ERROR TO UNICOM.
