Narrative:
We were northeast of hampton VOR at FL390 in cruise flight. We received a clearance to descend to FL260. As descent was initiated #1 engine quit running. An engine failure checklist was completed. Passing FL360 on descent ATC asked us to stop descent at 350. We advised ATC of our engine failure, declared an emergency, and requested further descent. We discussed landing sites and selected phl. Approach and landing to 27L were uneventful. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: en route from germany to phl. USA. Engine overtemped. Felt it was prudent to shut it down to save the engine. This proved out as mechanics boroscoped the engine and FAA allowed another 60 hours of operation. Has 400 passenger destination phl, considered all factors and determined phl was the nearest suitable airport.
