Narrative:
Flight took off runway 8L at ont and commenced right turn (toward pqc VOR) within 1 mi, as depicted on prado 1 SID. After we started turn, tower called out traffic to us at 1 O'clock. First officer (not flying) saw traffic close, at our altitude, and told me to turn left, which I did immediately. Tower then told traffic, which was shooting touch and go's on runway 8R, to tighten his right turn. Runways at ont are very close together. When we questioned ont tower later, they said they had seen the situation the whole time on their radar, and that at the time of conflict we were above traffic. Perhaps so, but they didn't advise us of the traffic until too late, and we passed each other too close. West/O evasive action, we could have struck the other aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR ON DEP CAME IN CLOSE PROX TO AN SMT ON TOUCH AND GO.
Narrative: FLT TOOK OFF RWY 8L AT ONT AND COMMENCED RIGHT TURN (TOWARD PQC VOR) WITHIN 1 MI, AS DEPICTED ON PRADO 1 SID. AFTER WE STARTED TURN, TWR CALLED OUT TFC TO US AT 1 O'CLOCK. F/O (NOT FLYING) SAW TFC CLOSE, AT OUR ALT, AND TOLD ME TO TURN LEFT, WHICH I DID IMMEDIATELY. TWR THEN TOLD TFC, WHICH WAS SHOOTING TOUCH AND GO'S ON RWY 8R, TO TIGHTEN HIS RIGHT TURN. RWYS AT ONT ARE VERY CLOSE TOGETHER. WHEN WE QUESTIONED ONT TWR LATER, THEY SAID THEY HAD SEEN THE SITUATION THE WHOLE TIME ON THEIR RADAR, AND THAT AT THE TIME OF CONFLICT WE WERE ABOVE TFC. PERHAPS SO, BUT THEY DIDN'T ADVISE US OF THE TFC UNTIL TOO LATE, AND WE PASSED EACH OTHER TOO CLOSE. W/O EVASIVE ACTION, WE COULD HAVE STRUCK THE OTHER ACFT.
