Narrative:
Immediately after takeoff a loud bang was heard followed by some airframe vibration. #3 engine instruments were observed to be winding back. #3 engine throttle was retarded and abnormal procedures checklists were accomplished, engine was then shut down. Dfw tower was notified of the engine failure and a close in downwind was requested. F/a's were appraised of the situation and passenger were told by PA an emergency was declared and fire equipment was requested. Aircraft performance was not critical and there were no fire indications, fuel was not dumped. We made an overweight landing that was smooth and uneventful. Emergency crews looked us over and reported no problems. We taxied into the gate followed by crash crews. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter stated that aircraft engine turbine blades started coming apart as the aircraft was still on the runway and was, according to observers, emitting sparks like a 4TH of july sparkler. On inspection it was noted that the rear of the engine had been wiped out by the turbine blades failing.

EMER CREWS LOOKED US OVER AND REPORTED NO PROBLEMS. WE TAXIED INTO THE GATE FOLLOWED BY CRASH CREWS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH REPORTER REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: REPORTER STATED THAT ACFT ENGINE TURBINE BLADES STARTED COMING APART AS THE ACFT WAS STILL ON THE RWY AND WAS, ACCORDING TO OBSERVERS, EMITTING SPARKS LIKE A 4TH OF JULY SPARKLER. ON INSPECTION IT WAS NOTED THAT THE REAR OF THE ENGINE HAD BEEN WIPED OUT BY THE TURBINE BLADES FAILING.
