Narrative:
Possible missed tower controller directive.while landing at deer valley airport I followed the standard procedure for contacting the tower when approaching from the north at such time I declared my type of aircraft and location and that I was inbound for landing. My intention was to be routed to the 7R runway. I was directed to follow the canal toward the airport; I was then directed to follow a cessna that was at my 12 that was on the downwind for 7L. I complied with the tower and turned to the downwind.in order to comply with the tower's direction I turned right and entered a wide downwind. I did this knowing full well that I would overtake the cessna that was traveling on the downwind. Once this happened tower contacted me and advised that they would call my base. This is a standard procedure used for spacing. At this point I should have requested again to be handed off to 7R however; with the amount of interaction taking place between the other pilots and the tower I just resolved to wait my turn on 7L. Finally after listening to quite a few discussions between the controller and other pilots in the pattern I was cleared to land. I turned to a heading that would intersect the glide slope for 7L.turned onto high and left of centerline (cl) final for 7L; proceeded inbound. I encountered a cessna and overtook on short final passed by +/-200 horizontal; +/-50 above. Observed cessna appeared to be exiting runway then delayed when I was flaring to land. Controller advised cessna to expedite taxi. I continued with short field landing taxied to bravo taxiway. I overheard controller and another pilot that were discussing my landing controller advised the other pilot that they trying to advise me to go around. I advised controller that I did not hear directive to go around.what I believe caused the problem:1. I may have missed a call from the controller to amend my clearance.2. The controller not directing me to the longer runway with higher speed incoming and departing planes.3. The controller directing a baron to follow a cessna in traffic pattern.4. The controller was being taxed by other pilots within the pattern that were not reading back directions correctly.5. Controller cleared me to land without enough separation for differing speeds of aircraft. 6. Lack of dialog between myself and the controller.what I believe can be done to prevent this or correct the situation:1. I would recommend that all high performance and twin engine planes be landed on the longer runway if at all possible (7R and 24L) no matter what direction they are coming from.2. I can and I will make a point of contacting the controller on short final to verify clearance to land.human performance considerations:I perceived that the controller was providing proper spacing when calling my base.based upon the distance from the airport I believed there was proper spacing for my landing. Based upon this when I encountered and overtook the cessna I assumed that they had drifted north of the approach to 7R and they were landing on 7R. Thus; I did not perceive that I had overtaken an airplane that was landing on 7L.I saw the cessna on the runway and it appeared they would be exiting before my touchdown [but] they were delayed. I heard the controller direct them to turn off the runway at my approximate touchdown.I was deliberate in my plan to land and had reduced my planes speed to below blue line and felt it was safer to land short than to attempt a go around at such a low altitude and slow pace.
