Narrative:
On a VFR flight from clt to cha on oct/xx/89 in our helicopter while cruising at 3000' MSL in the vicinity of 315 radial 20 DME of the foothills (odf) VOR, I suddenly saw a military fgt approaching up the valley at what appeared to be level with me with a closure rate of approximately 400-500 KTS. I immediately executed an evasive maneuver to avoid a collision with him. We banked the helicopter about 90 degree to the left and lost about 200' altitude. I don't know that he ever saw us and I was unable to get any of his 'numbers'. The fgt was a light gray in color and appeared to be on a low level run of some sort. I immediately checked our position with my copilot referencing latitude/long coordinates from the LORAN on board as well as DME/radial distance from the closest VOR. No communication was attempted with the fgt since he uses 'UHF' frequency and we have 'VHF'. Upon landing at our destination I had our mechanics inspect the helicopter as well as notify the helicopter manufacturing of what had occurred to the helicopter (ie, evasive maneuver). They had our mechanics check the 'spindle blocks' and rotor head for any signs of cracks, stress, etc. Nothing was found and 'they' (the manufacturer) agreed that no damage had occurred.

Title: NMAC BETWEEN TWO VFR ACFT.
