Narrative:
I was conducting OJT. My developmental instructed aircraft X to line up and wait (luaw) but they read back 'cleared for takeoff.' the read back error was caught and aircraft X was instructed to hold short of the runway.revert back to 'position and hold' instead of luaw. The only read back error I ever had with taxi into position and hold (tiph) was to hold short of the runway which is not a safety issue. I've had many aircraft mistake an luaw clearance for a takeoff clearance.
