Narrative:
After departing oakland, was trying to get a TCA clearance direct to monterey, ca. During the course of the request, ATC got a little upset with me. I had the 090 degree radial off of sfo selected and the needle was centered, indicating I was right on the edge of the sfo TCA. It was told to remain clear. I feel that I should have given a wider berth for the TCA. ATC did not say I had violated the TCA, but it certainly was close. I climbed along the 090 degree radial and then cut south under the floor of the TCA. Riding the edge like that is not always the safest practice.
