Narrative:
Flight cleared for visual approach to runway 24 by approach control. Approach control handed aircraft off to local controller. Aircraft cleared to land and was issued VFR traffic at 1 O'clock position 8 mi entering left base runway 18. On approximately 5 mi final captain asked name of town just below aircraft. A male voice answered name of town and then said 'they are right behind me'. At that time first officer observed single engine small aircraft passing off right side of aircraft 1 O'clock position. At the same time the small aircraft reported our aircraft in sight and turned towards the north. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: callback revealed that the small aircraft was less than 1 mi away when he crossed the reporter's aircraft. He did not see the aircraft until the last min, but doesn't think it was real close. The local controller had issued traffic and he believes instructed the small aircraft to go behind his aircraft. Since no address was given in the report, this analyst obtained it from the reporter.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT ON FINAL CAME IN CLOSE PROX TO ANOTHER ACFT ON DOWNWIND FOR A DIFFERENT RWY.
Narrative: FLT CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH TO RWY 24 BY APCH CTL. APCH CTL HANDED ACFT OFF TO LCL CTLR. ACFT CLRED TO LAND AND WAS ISSUED VFR TFC AT 1 O'CLOCK POSITION 8 MI ENTERING LEFT BASE RWY 18. ON APPROX 5 MI FINAL CAPT ASKED NAME OF TOWN JUST BELOW ACFT. A MALE VOICE ANSWERED NAME OF TOWN AND THEN SAID 'THEY ARE RIGHT BEHIND ME'. AT THAT TIME F/O OBSERVED SINGLE ENGINE SMA PASSING OFF RIGHT SIDE OF ACFT 1 O'CLOCK POSITION. AT THE SAME TIME THE SMA REPORTED OUR ACFT IN SIGHT AND TURNED TOWARDS THE NORTH. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH REPORTER REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: CALLBACK REVEALED THAT THE SMA WAS LESS THAN 1 MI AWAY WHEN HE CROSSED THE REPORTER'S ACFT. HE DID NOT SEE THE ACFT UNTIL THE LAST MIN, BUT DOESN'T THINK IT WAS REAL CLOSE. THE LCL CTLR HAD ISSUED TFC AND HE BELIEVES INSTRUCTED THE SMA TO GO BEHIND HIS ACFT. SINCE NO ADDRESS WAS GIVEN IN THE REPORT, THIS ANALYST OBTAINED IT FROM THE RPTR.
