Narrative:

Company continues to excessively put pilots on a second aircraft type with minimal training or only a requalified check. Ie, widebody transport X second officer based in boston called up to fly widebody transport Y in sea, has not flown widebody transport Y for 11 months and gets a requalified check only. Even if pilot is qualified he is not proficient. Company will not train enough pilots on widebody transport Y thus always short. Thus company continually calls pilots (captain, first officer, second officer) from other aircraft to fly the widebody transport Y (other aircraft also) with short notice. In oct/89 49 second officer's were assigned on temporary (involuntary callup) status in sea, 30 second officer in msp and 20 second officer in bos. The captain's and first officer's were slightly less. Nov and dec 1989 involuntary assignments are as great as ever in all equipment and positions (capts, first officer, second officer, widebody transport X, widebody transport Y, heavy transport, large transport). This situation is getting out of hand. I'm tired of hearing 'you guys better watch me I haven't flown this in 6 months or a year'. Numerous times both the captain and myself have not seen the widebody transport Y for 6 months and we have a new first officer. Company may be meeting the letter of the law (FAA regulations) by giving a requalified checkride or if off aircraft more than 1 yr, 2 days 'so-called ground' school, a practice simulator and a checkride. However, the bottom line is these widebody transport Y involuntary crews and myself are not safe and are an accident waiting to happen. Please investigate the numbers of pilots company uses each month on an involuntary temporary basis. This practice should be discontinued. Pilots should be qualified on one aircraft only, and not 2 or 3 as is the case at company just to save money.

Title: EXPERIENCES SO'S COMPLAINT ABOUT COMPANY POLICY OF DUAL QUALIFICATION AND REQUALIFICATION TRAINING.

Narrative: COMPANY CONTINUES TO EXCESSIVELY PUT PLTS ON A SECOND ACFT TYPE WITH MINIMAL TRAINING OR ONLY A REQUALIFIED CHECK. IE, WDB X S/O BASED IN BOSTON CALLED UP TO FLY WDB Y IN SEA, HAS NOT FLOWN WDB Y FOR 11 MONTHS AND GETS A REQUALIFIED CHECK ONLY. EVEN IF PLT IS QUALIFIED HE IS NOT PROFICIENT. COMPANY WILL NOT TRAIN ENOUGH PLTS ON WDB Y THUS ALWAYS SHORT. THUS COMPANY CONTINUALLY CALLS PLTS (CAPT, F/O, S/O) FROM OTHER ACFT TO FLY THE WDB Y (OTHER ACFT ALSO) WITH SHORT NOTICE. IN OCT/89 49 S/O'S WERE ASSIGNED ON TEMPORARY (INVOLUNTARY CALLUP) STATUS IN SEA, 30 S/O IN MSP AND 20 S/O IN BOS. THE CAPT'S AND F/O'S WERE SLIGHTLY LESS. NOV AND DEC 1989 INVOLUNTARY ASSIGNMENTS ARE AS GREAT AS EVER IN ALL EQUIPMENT AND POSITIONS (CAPTS, F/O, S/O, WDB X, WDB Y, HVT, LGT). THIS SITUATION IS GETTING OUT OF HAND. I'M TIRED OF HEARING 'YOU GUYS BETTER WATCH ME I HAVEN'T FLOWN THIS IN 6 MONTHS OR A YEAR'. NUMEROUS TIMES BOTH THE CAPT AND MYSELF HAVE NOT SEEN THE WDB Y FOR 6 MONTHS AND WE HAVE A NEW F/O. COMPANY MAY BE MEETING THE LETTER OF THE LAW (FAA REGS) BY GIVING A REQUALIFIED CHECKRIDE OR IF OFF ACFT MORE THAN 1 YR, 2 DAYS 'SO-CALLED GND' SCHOOL, A PRACTICE SIMULATOR AND A CHECKRIDE. HOWEVER, THE BOTTOM LINE IS THESE WDB Y INVOLUNTARY CREWS AND MYSELF ARE NOT SAFE AND ARE AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THE NUMBERS OF PLTS COMPANY USES EACH MONTH ON AN INVOLUNTARY TEMPORARY BASIS. THIS PRACTICE SHOULD BE DISCONTINUED. PLTS SHOULD BE QUALIFIED ON ONE ACFT ONLY, AND NOT 2 OR 3 AS IS THE CASE AT COMPANY JUST TO SAVE MONEY.
