Narrative:
Departed jfk runway 31 on a jfk 2 departure, breezy pint climb. After lift-off, turned direct to canarsie VOR 9112.30), climbing to our assigned altitude of 5000'. After changing to departure control, we were cleared to 7000'. At 4500' in the climb, departure control told us to stop our climb at 4000'. We descended to 4000' and were advised of traffic at 12 O'clock (which we sighted). Also at this time we were in a 15 degree angle of bank turn (due to our gross weight and minimum maneuvering speed of 236 KTS--we were at 210 KTS at the time) to the right to intercept the 223 degree radial of cri outbnd. Departure control then gave us a vector of 250 degrees to intercept the radial (we were in the turn, going through approximately 215 degrees at the time). Departure control said we were east of the radial and in conflict of the traffic. Our instruments did not indicate being off course, as we had just made station passage over cri and were in the turn to intercept the 223 degree right outbnd. Also I might mention that T strong storm with a cold front had just passed the area, and the winds were very strong out of the west, causing us to drift left of the canarsie VOR and the 223 degree right outbnd.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG TRACK DEVIATION DURING SID FROM JFK.
Narrative: DEPARTED JFK RWY 31 ON A JFK 2 DEP, BREEZY PINT CLB. AFTER LIFT-OFF, TURNED DIRECT TO CANARSIE VOR 9112.30), CLBING TO OUR ASSIGNED ALT OF 5000'. AFTER CHANGING TO DEP CTL, WE WERE CLRED TO 7000'. AT 4500' IN THE CLB, DEP CTL TOLD US TO STOP OUR CLB AT 4000'. WE DSNDED TO 4000' AND WERE ADVISED OF TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK (WHICH WE SIGHTED). ALSO AT THIS TIME WE WERE IN A 15 DEG ANGLE OF BANK TURN (DUE TO OUR GROSS WT AND MINIMUM MANEUVERING SPD OF 236 KTS--WE WERE AT 210 KTS AT THE TIME) TO THE RIGHT TO INTERCEPT THE 223 DEG RADIAL OF CRI OUTBND. DEP CTL THEN GAVE US A VECTOR OF 250 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE RADIAL (WE WERE IN THE TURN, GOING THROUGH APPROX 215 DEGS AT THE TIME). DEP CTL SAID WE WERE E OF THE RADIAL AND IN CONFLICT OF THE TFC. OUR INSTRUMENTS DID NOT INDICATE BEING OFF COURSE, AS WE HAD JUST MADE STATION PASSAGE OVER CRI AND WERE IN THE TURN TO INTERCEPT THE 223 DEG R OUTBND. ALSO I MIGHT MENTION THAT T STRONG STORM WITH A COLD FRONT HAD JUST PASSED THE AREA, AND THE WINDS WERE VERY STRONG OUT OF THE W, CAUSING US TO DRIFT LEFT OF THE CANARSIE VOR AND THE 223 DEG R OUTBND.
