Narrative:

Copilot was flying. While climbing to FL290, we were subsequently cleared to FL310. I read back clearance and first officer set FL310 in altitude window. While passing through 29700', ATC stated 'maintain 290 and turn left 30 degrees for traffic conflict.' we rapidly went back to FL290 and turned left. We notified ZTL (134.8) that we had been cleared to FL310. We assume ATC made a mistake. Reason: controller overloaded and overworked.

Title: ACR LGT AMENDED CLRNC ALT ASSIGNMENT AND RADAR VECTOR TO PREVENT LOSS OF SEPARATION.

Narrative: COPLT WAS FLYING. WHILE CLBING TO FL290, WE WERE SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED TO FL310. I READ BACK CLRNC AND F/O SET FL310 IN ALT WINDOW. WHILE PASSING THROUGH 29700', ATC STATED 'MAINTAIN 290 AND TURN LEFT 30 DEGS FOR TFC CONFLICT.' WE RAPIDLY WENT BACK TO FL290 AND TURNED LEFT. WE NOTIFIED ZTL (134.8) THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO FL310. WE ASSUME ATC MADE A MISTAKE. REASON: CTLR OVERLOADED AND OVERWORKED.
