Narrative:
We were cleared for STAR golden gate one arrival, sfo. I, first officer, was flying. Had planned and was executing descent so as to arrive, as STAR states to expect, at 6 DME north of sfo VOR on 303 radial at 11,000' and 250 KIAS. Somewhere (can't exactly remember) about FL200 to FL250 oakland center/ATC then instructed to now cross 20 DME north sfo at 11,000' and 250 KIAS. Immediately I applied flight speed brakes to expedite descent. Within a minute or two both captain and I realized that we might not be able to accomplish crossing restrictions per clearance. Captain advised ATC of same. ATC stated to at least cross 20 DME north at 250 KTS. ATC implied but did not totally clarify that 11,000' assignment by 20 DME had been cancelled. Estimate actual crossing of 20 DME fix occurred at between 11,000 and 11,400.
