Narrative:

We were just completing a local test flight. Due to the plane's exceptional performance, I had a good bit of my attention inside the cockpit to be certain that none of the plane's limitations were exceeded. Around 20 DME on the bna 270 degree right, approach control gave us vectors back to the airport by assigning us a heading to fly of 200 degrees (this is the heading approach usually assigns to planes on the downwind for runways 2L or 2C). Because of this, I was thinking that we were only 6-10 mi west of the airport. I tuned dobbs (the LOM for 2L) into the ADF and idented it. I also tuned the ILS to 2L into the radio and idented it. Approach pointed out a north small transport that was in our 12-1 O'clock position, inbound for runway 2C at bna. I called the traffic to approach and we were instructed to fly a visibility to 2L and maintain visibility with the small transport inbound for 2C. Cleared for the visibility for 2L, my localizer starting coming in rather quickly from right to left. I looked to the left of the plant at a 90 degree angle and saw a runway that looked like 2L. I then told my first officer, who was flying, to tighten up the turn to final since we were flying through the final at a 130 degree intercept. I had a flag up on my instrument. First officer exclaimed, 'wow, we sure are high for the runway.' we proceeded to get the gear and flaps down as we continued inbound. I looked for runways 2C and 2R, but I didn't see them. Also, the small transport had disappeared. I was very puzzled now, since my localizer had come alive as we flew through the extended centerline of this runway that we were now lined up on, but now I had a flag on it and had lost the identify. As we descended through 3600', approach asked us our heading and then informed us that we were lined up for runway 1 at john C. Tune field. We got vectors to bna and landed uneventfully on 2L. I must also say that our bearing to dobbs was the same bearing that we would have had much closer in just prior to turning final to 2L. The only indication I would have had on instruments that would have readily helped us would have been the DME, which I nev er really looked at. Should have used the DME along with my readily available clues.

Title: COMMUTER SMT RETURNING FROM A TEST FLT MADE APCH TO WRONG RWY.

Narrative: WE WERE JUST COMPLETING A LCL TEST FLT. DUE TO THE PLANE'S EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE, I HAD A GOOD BIT OF MY ATTN INSIDE THE COCKPIT TO BE CERTAIN THAT NONE OF THE PLANE'S LIMITATIONS WERE EXCEEDED. AROUND 20 DME ON THE BNA 270 DEG R, APCH CTL GAVE US VECTORS BACK TO THE ARPT BY ASSIGNING US A HDG TO FLY OF 200 DEGS (THIS IS THE HDG APCH USUALLY ASSIGNS TO PLANES ON THE DOWNWIND FOR RWYS 2L OR 2C). BECAUSE OF THIS, I WAS THINKING THAT WE WERE ONLY 6-10 MI W OF THE ARPT. I TUNED DOBBS (THE LOM FOR 2L) INTO THE ADF AND IDENTED IT. I ALSO TUNED THE ILS TO 2L INTO THE RADIO AND IDENTED IT. APCH POINTED OUT A N SMT THAT WAS IN OUR 12-1 O'CLOCK POS, INBND FOR RWY 2C AT BNA. I CALLED THE TFC TO APCH AND WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO FLY A VIS TO 2L AND MAINTAIN VIS WITH THE SMT INBND FOR 2C. CLRED FOR THE VIS FOR 2L, MY LOC STARTING COMING IN RATHER QUICKLY FROM RIGHT TO LEFT. I LOOKED TO THE LEFT OF THE PLANT AT A 90 DEG ANGLE AND SAW A RWY THAT LOOKED LIKE 2L. I THEN TOLD MY F/O, WHO WAS FLYING, TO TIGHTEN UP THE TURN TO FINAL SINCE WE WERE FLYING THROUGH THE FINAL AT A 130 DEG INTERCEPT. I HAD A FLAG UP ON MY INSTRUMENT. F/O EXCLAIMED, 'WOW, WE SURE ARE HIGH FOR THE RWY.' WE PROCEEDED TO GET THE GEAR AND FLAPS DOWN AS WE CONTINUED INBND. I LOOKED FOR RWYS 2C AND 2R, BUT I DIDN'T SEE THEM. ALSO, THE SMT HAD DISAPPEARED. I WAS VERY PUZZLED NOW, SINCE MY LOC HAD COME ALIVE AS WE FLEW THROUGH THE EXTENDED CENTERLINE OF THIS RWY THAT WE WERE NOW LINED UP ON, BUT NOW I HAD A FLAG ON IT AND HAD LOST THE IDENT. AS WE DSNDED THROUGH 3600', APCH ASKED US OUR HDG AND THEN INFORMED US THAT WE WERE LINED UP FOR RWY 1 AT JOHN C.
