Narrative:
While taxiing to runway 10R, with very limited visibility, the captain, who was controling the aircraft, and I misidentified an area as taxiway C but in fact was a prepared area between taxiway C and runway 10R. Upon realizing our mistake the captain immediately positioned the aircraft onto taxiway C. The area we taxied onto was between taxiway C, S3A, and S3B (see airport diagram for portland, or). Limited visibility, caused by fog, very, very poor taxiway directional markings, and a slow response by ground control who was tracking our ground movement on radar, caused this incident. Recommendations: an immediate review of taxiing directions at this airport. They are inadequate especially in view of the fog problems they typically encounter. Callback conversation with reporter revealed following information. The area between the runway 10R taxiway C bounded by S3B and S3A is now all pavement. Taxiway signs are totally inadequate to show the turn of taxiway C from the terminal area to paralleling runway 10R.

Title: TAXIING IN NEAR ZERO, ZERO CONDITIONS, FLT CREW OF MLG UNABLE TO SEE TXWY MARKINGS FOR TXWY C AT PDX.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 10R, WITH VERY LIMITED VISIBILITY, THE CAPT, WHO WAS CTLING THE ACFT, AND I MISIDENTIFIED AN AREA AS TXWY C BUT IN FACT WAS A PREPARED AREA BETWEEN TXWY C AND RWY 10R. UPON REALIZING OUR MISTAKE THE CAPT IMMEDIATELY POSITIONED THE ACFT ONTO TXWY C. THE AREA WE TAXIED ONTO WAS BETWEEN TXWY C, S3A, AND S3B (SEE ARPT DIAGRAM FOR PORTLAND, OR). LIMITED VISIBILITY, CAUSED BY FOG, VERY, VERY POOR TXWY DIRECTIONAL MARKINGS, AND A SLOW RESPONSE BY GND CTL WHO WAS TRACKING OUR GND MOVEMENT ON RADAR, CAUSED THIS INCIDENT. RECOMMENDATIONS: AN IMMEDIATE REVIEW OF TAXIING DIRECTIONS AT THIS ARPT. THEY ARE INADEQUATE ESPECIALLY IN VIEW OF THE FOG PROBLEMS THEY TYPICALLY ENCOUNTER. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED FOLLOWING INFO. THE AREA BETWEEN THE RWY 10R TXWY C BOUNDED BY S3B AND S3A IS NOW ALL PAVEMENT. TXWY SIGNS ARE TOTALLY INADEQUATE TO SHOW THE TURN OF TXWY C FROM THE TERMINAL AREA TO PARALLELING RWY 10R.
