Narrative:
During a flight from dfw to clt, nc on the 'unarm five arrival', a failure to meet a crossing altitude restriction occurred. Clearance was to cross 'adena' at 12,000' and 250 KIAS. As captain, I was flying the aircraft. In planning my descent, I picked the wrong mileage off of the arrival chart. Instead of crossing adena as the clearance specified, I estimate we crossed adena at approximately 13,500' and 300 KIAS. When we were just passing adena, the controller asked us if the previous controller had given us a 12,000' 250 KT restriction. I then realized my error. Contributing factors: first time into charlotte. Second trip as a new captain. WX system in the area. The arrival chart has a substantial amount of information printed around the area in question. While thorough examination shows all information to be accurate, the word 'adena' is located directly under a subsequent fix on the arrival (this fix being 'locks'), which contributed to my misread of the correct mileage to 'adena'. Corrective actions: have the first officer fly the airplane when things start piling up. Review the arrival chart.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR LGT FAILS TO MEET CROSSING RESTRICTION ON UNARM FIVE ARR TO CLT.
Narrative: DURING A FLT FROM DFW TO CLT, NC ON THE 'UNARM FIVE ARRIVAL', A FAILURE TO MEET A XING ALT RESTRICTION OCCURRED. CLRNC WAS TO CROSS 'ADENA' AT 12,000' AND 250 KIAS. AS CAPT, I WAS FLYING THE ACFT. IN PLANNING MY DSCNT, I PICKED THE WRONG MILEAGE OFF OF THE ARR CHART. INSTEAD OF XING ADENA AS THE CLRNC SPECIFIED, I ESTIMATE WE CROSSED ADENA AT APPROX 13,500' AND 300 KIAS. WHEN WE WERE JUST PASSING ADENA, THE CTLR ASKED US IF THE PREVIOUS CTLR HAD GIVEN US A 12,000' 250 KT RESTRICTION. I THEN REALIZED MY ERROR. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: FIRST TIME INTO CHARLOTTE. SECOND TRIP AS A NEW CAPT. WX SYSTEM IN THE AREA. THE ARR CHART HAS A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF INFO PRINTED AROUND THE AREA IN QUESTION. WHILE THOROUGH EXAMINATION SHOWS ALL INFO TO BE ACCURATE, THE WORD 'ADENA' IS LOCATED DIRECTLY UNDER A SUBSEQUENT FIX ON THE ARRIVAL (THIS FIX BEING 'LOCKS'), WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO MY MISREAD OF THE CORRECT MILEAGE TO 'ADENA'. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: HAVE THE F/O FLY THE AIRPLANE WHEN THINGS START PILING UP. REVIEW THE ARR CHART.
