Narrative:
While being vectored for ILS 26L approach clt (inbound course 001 degrees) with captain flying, approach control gave us a 90 degree heading to intercept the localizer. As we started to go through the localizer, approach control cleared us for the approach to maintain 4600' MSL until established on localizer. The captain rolled the aircraft into a 60 degree bank turn to rejoin the localizer. I told captain to watch his angle of bank (as I reached for the controls, to stop any further increase in angle of bank), and called out altitude as he started to descend to next lower altitude on approach--although he was not completely established on the localizer at that time. Approach gave us another heading to reintercept localizer and at that time also gave us descent to 3000' MSL. Factors involved: captain's anticipation of check ride, which he seemed anxious about and admitted that he was not quite up to speed on procedures; and approach control's 90 degree intercept heading at localizer was a little excessive. To prevent recurrence: captain needs more training on IFR and aircraft procedures; as a first officer, I should have exerted even more authority; and a better vector from approach control to intercept the localizer was in order--the 90 degree turn-on in IFR conditions was part of the original problem, causing captain's steep bank angle to reintercept the localizer.

Title: ACR MLG ALT DEVIATION EXCURSION FROM CLRNC.
Narrative: WHILE BEING VECTORED FOR ILS 26L APCH CLT (INBND COURSE 001 DEGS) WITH CAPT FLYING, APCH CTL GAVE US A 90 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT THE LOC. AS WE STARTED TO GO THROUGH THE LOC, APCH CTL CLRED US FOR THE APCH TO MAINTAIN 4600' MSL UNTIL ESTABLISHED ON LOC. THE CAPT ROLLED THE ACFT INTO A 60 DEG BANK TURN TO REJOIN THE LOC. APCH GAVE US ANOTHER HDG TO REINTERCEPT LOC AND AT THAT TIME ALSO GAVE US DSCNT TO 3000' MSL. FACTORS INVOLVED: CAPT'S ANTICIPATION OF CHK RIDE, WHICH HE SEEMED ANXIOUS ABOUT AND ADMITTED THAT HE WAS NOT QUITE UP TO SPD ON PROCS; AND APCH CTL'S 90 DEG INTERCEPT HDG AT LOC WAS A LITTLE EXCESSIVE. TO PREVENT RECURRENCE: CAPT NEEDS MORE TRNING ON IFR AND ACFT PROCS; AS A F/O, I SHOULD HAVE EXERTED EVEN MORE AUTHORITY; AND A BETTER VECTOR FROM APCH CTL TO INTERCEPT THE LOC WAS IN ORDER--THE 90 DEG TURN-ON IN IFR CONDITIONS WAS PART OF THE ORIGINAL PROB, CAUSING CAPT'S STEEP BANK ANGLE TO REINTERCEPT THE LOC.
