Narrative:
I inadvertently flew aircraft with an open log write-up. When I picked up the aircraft at ewr, I became preoccupied with an MEL which was not shown on the release. Upon arrival at pit and reexamining previous log entries I noticed that log item #57 had not been properly cleared even though a clearing entry was next to it. It turned out an engine vibration monitor had been robbed for another aircraft and no log entry had been made. The entry appearing next to item 57 pertained to another write-up. When I brought this to the attention of maintenance they checked the compartment and discovered that the replacement part had been installed but the packing and records for the part were loose in the compartment. We subsequently got the log corrected.
