Narrative:
During descent into iad from FL350 we entered an overcast layer beginning at FL230 and leveled at FL220. We encountered rain and turned on the radar. Within seconds we flew into severe rain which lasted less than 20 seconds. The noise was deafening and the aircraft maintained altitude and airspeed increased from 300 KTS to 315 KTS. In the descent there were no visible thunderstorms protruding from the level overcast at FL230 and no reports from other aircraft to deviate. When the radar came up there was a radar echo 30 mi east of our position. Upon postflt inspection damage occurred to the radome left and right engine nose spinners and the lower anti-collision light was broken.
