Narrative:
The flight was progressing routinely and as planned. Before gnv we were cleared homey 8 STAR to pbi. We pulled out the STAR and set aside the high altitude chart. After crossing gnv we were cleared to cross 80 NM north of homey at 330. We looked at the STAR to see if this was a named or otherwise idented fix--it was not. The autoplt was flying the published STAR that was loaded into the vlfirst officermega (RNAV) system. It is difficult and time-consuming to insert a radial/DME offset into an already working flight plan, so I elected to use the data page for a unique fix and enter a normal gndspd for calculator purposes. We had 8000' to lose, so I planned on starting down 10 mins from the fix and at a rate of 1000 FPM. It would have worked out ok. In completing our flight log prior to descent I used the CDU to get some other information and out of habit left it on the navigation page, which was showing the STAR route gnv to inpin to homey, etc. I inadvertently started using the ete on that page for my descent planning information, so 10 mins out from the fix, I started down and in making the transition realized we were 10 mins from homey, and not 10 mins from 80 NM north of homey. Needless to say we didn't make the restriction.

Title: CORP JET WITH ADVANCED LONG RANGE NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT FAILS TO MEET CROSSING RESTRICTION IN DESCENT.
Narrative: THE FLT WAS PROGRESSING ROUTINELY AND AS PLANNED. BEFORE GNV WE WERE CLRED HOMEY 8 STAR TO PBI. WE PULLED OUT THE STAR AND SET ASIDE THE HIGH ALT CHART. AFTER XING GNV WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS 80 NM N OF HOMEY AT 330. WE LOOKED AT THE STAR TO SEE IF THIS WAS A NAMED OR OTHERWISE IDENTED FIX--IT WAS NOT. THE AUTOPLT WAS FLYING THE PUBLISHED STAR THAT WAS LOADED INTO THE VLF/OMEGA (RNAV) SYS. IT IS DIFFICULT AND TIME-CONSUMING TO INSERT A RADIAL/DME OFFSET INTO AN ALREADY WORKING FLT PLAN, SO I ELECTED TO USE THE DATA PAGE FOR A UNIQUE FIX AND ENTER A NORMAL GNDSPD FOR CALCULATOR PURPOSES. WE HAD 8000' TO LOSE, SO I PLANNED ON STARTING DOWN 10 MINS FROM THE FIX AND AT A RATE OF 1000 FPM. IT WOULD HAVE WORKED OUT OK. IN COMPLETING OUR FLT LOG PRIOR TO DSCNT I USED THE CDU TO GET SOME OTHER INFO AND OUT OF HABIT LEFT IT ON THE NAV PAGE, WHICH WAS SHOWING THE STAR ROUTE GNV TO INPIN TO HOMEY, ETC. I INADVERTENTLY STARTED USING THE ETE ON THAT PAGE FOR MY DSCNT PLANNING INFO, SO 10 MINS OUT FROM THE FIX, I STARTED DOWN AND IN MAKING THE TRANSITION REALIZED WE WERE 10 MINS FROM HOMEY, AND NOT 10 MINS FROM 80 NM N OF HOMEY. NEEDLESS TO SAY WE DIDN'T MAKE THE RESTRICTION.
