Narrative:
My student and I were flying an small aircraft and were being vectored for ILS runway 31 at sns. After reaching chualar NDB, mry approach requested that we report procedure turn inbound to chualar NDB. I failed to remember to remind my student to make the call due to the fact that I was involved with the explanation of the setup procedures involved with an ILS approach. As we approached the air traffic area I contacted approach and let them know I was getting close to the airport. At this time I was instructed to contact sns tower and was well within the air traffic area. We had to break off the approach because an aircraft was taking off in the opp direction to our approach. My error was getting too involved with the details and forgetting some of the basic element of any approach.
