Narrative:

ZNY controller cleared us direct to mad VOR, told us to maintain 10000', 250 KTS at mad. I was making arrival passenger announcement, but heard the transmission from the controller. I also heard the first officer, the PF, repeat the clearance back with an altitude of 10000'. The center controller then handed us off to bradley approach. As we descended through 10300', the approach controller advised us that we were supposed to level at 11000'. I confirmed this clearance with the approach controller, and we regained 11000' and leveled. I told the controller we had heard and read back 10000' to the center. He had no explanation, but gave me the phone # I requested to debrief the incident to the approach control supervisor. I was told there was no conflict involved and that the incident was therefore resolved at that level of contact.
