Narrative:

We were cruising at FL350. All aircraft, including ourselves, were being rerted around a line of thunderstorms which were on our arrival route to our destination. The radio was rather cluttered. I heard a clearance, which was partially blocked by another transmission, to descend to FL290 with discretion to FL240. Since I was unsure, I questioned the air traffic controller if that clearance was for our call sign, explaining that his transmission was partially blocked, and then I read back the entire clearance, including my full call sign. The air traffic controller confirmed it. I then requested an increase in airspeed and he replied that we could go 'normal speed,' which I answered with our call sign. We then started our descent to FL290. When our altitude was FL345 we were asked if our altitude was FL350. I answered that we were cleared to FL290 with FL240 at our discretion. The air traffic controller said that clearance was for another air carrier with a similar call sign. He apologized, saying that he must have misunderstood our company name in our call sign on our readback. There apparently was on conflict with other traffic. We climbed back to FL350. This seemed to be an honest mistake. One cause could have possible been the overload in one sector due to the WX rertes.

Title: MLG FLT CREW VERIFIED CLRNC WAS FOR THEIR ACFT. READBACK COMPLIED WITHCLRNC, THEN TOLD CLRNC WAS NOT FOR THEM.

Narrative: WE WERE CRUISING AT FL350. ALL ACFT, INCLUDING OURSELVES, WERE BEING RERTED AROUND A LINE OF TSTMS WHICH WERE ON OUR ARR ROUTE TO OUR DEST. THE RADIO WAS RATHER CLUTTERED. I HEARD A CLRNC, WHICH WAS PARTIALLY BLOCKED BY ANOTHER XMISSION, TO DSND TO FL290 WITH DISCRETION TO FL240. SINCE I WAS UNSURE, I QUESTIONED THE AIR TFC CTLR IF THAT CLRNC WAS FOR OUR CALL SIGN, EXPLAINING THAT HIS XMISSION WAS PARTIALLY BLOCKED, AND THEN I READ BACK THE ENTIRE CLRNC, INCLUDING MY FULL CALL SIGN. THE AIR TFC CTLR CONFIRMED IT. I THEN REQUESTED AN INCREASE IN AIRSPD AND HE REPLIED THAT WE COULD GO 'NORMAL SPD,' WHICH I ANSWERED WITH OUR CALL SIGN. WE THEN STARTED OUR DSCNT TO FL290. WHEN OUR ALT WAS FL345 WE WERE ASKED IF OUR ALT WAS FL350. I ANSWERED THAT WE WERE CLRED TO FL290 WITH FL240 AT OUR DISCRETION. THE AIR TFC CTLR SAID THAT CLRNC WAS FOR ANOTHER ACR WITH A SIMILAR CALL SIGN. HE APOLOGIZED, SAYING THAT HE MUST HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD OUR COMPANY NAME IN OUR CALL SIGN ON OUR READBACK. THERE APPARENTLY WAS ON CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC. WE CLBED BACK TO FL350. THIS SEEMED TO BE AN HONEST MISTAKE. ONE CAUSE COULD HAVE POSSIBLE BEEN THE OVERLOAD IN ONE SECTOR DUE TO THE WX RERTES.
