Narrative:

Flight jfk-alb on climb out through approximately 3000' MSL. Ny departure said 'company XXX, expedite climb through 7000, climb maintain 1-1-thousand.' I replied, 'roger, XXX.' at 10600' MSL controller said, 'company XXX, stop climb--descend maintain 10000.' I was extremely shocked at this, and while starting my descent back to 10000' MSL I replied, 'company XXX understood prior clearance to 1-1-thousand.' controller came back on and replied 'negative XXX, you were told to climb to 1-0-thousand.' in retrospect, I should have read back the original climb clearance fully, rather than just reply 'roger, XXX.' after the incident I asked the first officer what he had heard the controller say to us in the original climb clearance just prior to the altitude discrepancy. The first officer repeated back to me exactly what I thought I had heard, which was 'company XXX, expedite climb through 7000, climb maintain 1-1-thousand.'

I WAS EXTREMELY SHOCKED AT THIS, AND WHILE STARTING MY DSCNT BACK TO 10000' MSL I REPLIED, 'COMPANY XXX UNDERSTOOD PRIOR CLRNC TO 1-1-THOUSAND.'
