Narrative:
We were told to climb to 5000'. Shortly thereafter we were given traffic at 10 O'clock at 6000'. While looking for the traffic, my first officer said my name. I looked down and saw we were at 5800'. At that point we were given 13000'. After acknowledging the altitude, I said we had the medium large transport in sight. Later I called lax TRACON and they said there was no problem.
