Narrative:
Approaching chicago from the south, WX clear, radio frequency fairly uncongested, communications clear. Cruising at 12000' center issued clearance to descend to '1-0-thousand,' and I repeated cleared to '10-thousand.' level at 10000' for 1-2 mins when controller said, 'verify level at 1-1-thousand'! I replied 'no sir, you cleared us to 10-thousand.' he replied, 'climb to 1-1-thousand.' after landing I called center supervisor by phone. He knew of incident and indicated no traffic conflict had resulted and they were disregarding the event. I believe the clearance to 10000' was issued; however, once again the misinterp of '10' and '11' seems to occur more frequently than any other altitudes. The hearing error may have been mine; however, I must emphasize that I am 100 percent sure I repeated back 10 while setting the cockpit altitude alert system). The hearback problem we observe so often with ATC is again evident in this instance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF MLG READ BACK CLEARED TO 10000'. ARTCC CTLR LATER CLIMBED THE FLT BACK TO 11000'.
Narrative: APCHING CHICAGO FROM THE S, WX CLR, RADIO FREQ FAIRLY UNCONGESTED, COMS CLR. CRUISING AT 12000' CENTER ISSUED CLRNC TO DSND TO '1-0-THOUSAND,' AND I REPEATED CLRED TO '10-THOUSAND.' LEVEL AT 10000' FOR 1-2 MINS WHEN CTLR SAID, 'VERIFY LEVEL AT 1-1-THOUSAND'! I REPLIED 'NO SIR, YOU CLRED US TO 10-THOUSAND.' HE REPLIED, 'CLB TO 1-1-THOUSAND.' AFTER LNDG I CALLED CENTER SUPVR BY PHONE. HE KNEW OF INCIDENT AND INDICATED NO TFC CONFLICT HAD RESULTED AND THEY WERE DISREGARDING THE EVENT. I BELIEVE THE CLRNC TO 10000' WAS ISSUED; HOWEVER, ONCE AGAIN THE MISINTERP OF '10' AND '11' SEEMS TO OCCUR MORE FREQUENTLY THAN ANY OTHER ALTS. THE HEARING ERROR MAY HAVE BEEN MINE; HOWEVER, I MUST EMPHASIZE THAT I AM 100 PERCENT SURE I REPEATED BACK 10 WHILE SETTING THE COCKPIT ALT ALERT SYSTEM). THE HEARBACK PROB WE OBSERVE SO OFTEN WITH ATC IS AGAIN EVIDENT IN THIS INSTANCE.
