Narrative:
I overshot the assigned gate and made a turn back to the proper gate. Our procedure calls for the #2 engine to be shut down when on the ramp. I applied recommended power of 72% N2 to taxi to the gate and in so doing, the 'jet blast' blew loose lumber off a flat-bed truck that was parked at the adjacent terminal (narrow alley). The area was dimly lit and I was unaware of construction in that area. No ATIS, NOTAM, etc as a clue. Of course I am emotionally upset to have damaged another's property but as I continue to look back on the situation, I wonder why the construction supervisor or airport manager allows loose objects in a high risk area. Another day, I again flew into san diego. The trucks were parked with the cabin attendant facing our gates and the lumber had been taken off the flat-beds and stacked behind a brick wall. Colored stanchions are now in place and the whole area is cleaned up. Obviously, someone corrected a bad situation. After talking with my chief pilot we now taxi to the gate with both engines running and we don't start engines until out of the alley.
