Narrative:
Cleared to taxi to runway 4L at cmi. No mention of any other runways was given by tower. I made an incorrect assumption that the taxiway would lead me to the end of the runway 4L. Instead, it led me to runway 36 which we used for takeoff (in error). The taxiway does not join 4L at the departure end, but this was the first time I had departed from this runway, and did not realize this. We had been given an IFR release for O'hare to depart prior to XX15 local or incur a delay. The urgency of departure contributed to this error. We discovered the error shortly after takeoff when turning to our assigned heading. Tower advised us of the same shortly thereafter. Tower also stated that the transition from the taxiway to 4L 'was difficult to distinguish.' corrective action: clearly mark 36L with another sign use an arrow plus a sign 'to runway 4L'. Have ground issue a clearance for taxi to include 'via the south 100 of 36' when sending an aircraft to 4L. Reaffirm my conviction not to be rushed by anything.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLEARED TAXI RWY 04L AT CMI, MDT FLT CREW TAXIES TO, AND DEPARTS FROM RWY 36 IN ERROR. MISTAKE NOT CAUGHT BY GND OR LCL CTLR.
Narrative: CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 4L AT CMI. NO MENTION OF ANY OTHER RWYS WAS GIVEN BY TWR. I MADE AN INCORRECT ASSUMPTION THAT THE TXWY WOULD LEAD ME TO THE END OF THE RWY 4L. INSTEAD, IT LED ME TO RWY 36 WHICH WE USED FOR TKOF (IN ERROR). THE TXWY DOES NOT JOIN 4L AT THE DEP END, BUT THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD DEPARTED FROM THIS RWY, AND DID NOT REALIZE THIS. WE HAD BEEN GIVEN AN IFR RELEASE FOR O'HARE TO DEPART PRIOR TO XX15 LCL OR INCUR A DELAY. THE URGENCY OF DEP CONTRIBUTED TO THIS ERROR. WE DISCOVERED THE ERROR SHORTLY AFTER TKOF WHEN TURNING TO OUR ASSIGNED HDG. TWR ADVISED US OF THE SAME SHORTLY THEREAFTER. TWR ALSO STATED THAT THE TRANSITION FROM THE TXWY TO 4L 'WAS DIFFICULT TO DISTINGUISH.' CORRECTIVE ACTION: CLEARLY MARK 36L WITH ANOTHER SIGN USE AN ARROW PLUS A SIGN 'TO RWY 4L'. HAVE GND ISSUE A CLRNC FOR TAXI TO INCLUDE 'VIA THE SOUTH 100 OF 36' WHEN SENDING AN ACFT TO 4L. REAFFIRM MY CONVICTION NOT TO BE RUSHED BY ANYTHING.
