Narrative:
Our taxi instructions for departure were given as such: 'taxi to runway 16, cleared to cross 13'. This was the first time either the first officer or myself had ever taxied to runway 16 (we usually depart 13). We decided to take taxiway K, cross a, onto 13 for runway 16. Unlike what is depicted on the airport diagram, it is basically a straight line across 13 and 16 to the other taxiway from taxiway K. We proceeded to taxi. As we were crossing runway 13, ground asked us, do you want an intersection departure? Unclr as to why ground would ask that question, I asked the first officer whether or not we were even approved for an intersection takeoff. By this time we were approaching 16. Before we responded to ground, they called again saying, 'you're on an active runway without a clearance....you're cleared to back taxi 16.' at that time there was no traffic in the area. We back taxied 16 and were cleared for takeoff. This is the report I gave to my supervisor. However, at this time I would like to add that our taxi clearance did not include specific txwys. Also (again, unlike what is depicted on the airport diagram) there is a short taxiway connecting taxiway K to the taxiway opposite K. This taxiway only has runway 13 sidestripes. It has no hold short lines for either 13 or for 16. It has no runway sidestripes for runway 16.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF LTT INADVERTENTLY INTRUDED ON ACTIVE RWY.
Narrative: OUR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FOR DEP WERE GIVEN AS SUCH: 'TAXI TO RWY 16, CLRED TO CROSS 13'. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME EITHER THE F/O OR MYSELF HAD EVER TAXIED TO RWY 16 (WE USUALLY DEPART 13). WE DECIDED TO TAKE TXWY K, CROSS A, ONTO 13 FOR RWY 16. UNLIKE WHAT IS DEPICTED ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM, IT IS BASICALLY A STRAIGHT LINE ACROSS 13 AND 16 TO THE OTHER TXWY FROM TXWY K. WE PROCEEDED TO TAXI. AS WE WERE XING RWY 13, GND ASKED US, DO YOU WANT AN INTXN DEP? UNCLR AS TO WHY GND WOULD ASK THAT QUESTION, I ASKED THE F/O WHETHER OR NOT WE WERE EVEN APPROVED FOR AN INTXN TKOF. BY THIS TIME WE WERE APCHING 16. BEFORE WE RESPONDED TO GND, THEY CALLED AGAIN SAYING, 'YOU'RE ON AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT A CLRNC....YOU'RE CLRED TO BACK TAXI 16.' AT THAT TIME THERE WAS NO TFC IN THE AREA. WE BACK TAXIED 16 AND WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. THIS IS THE RPT I GAVE TO MY SUPVR. HOWEVER, AT THIS TIME I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT OUR TAXI CLRNC DID NOT INCLUDE SPECIFIC TXWYS. ALSO (AGAIN, UNLIKE WHAT IS DEPICTED ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM) THERE IS A SHORT TXWY CONNECTING TXWY K TO THE TXWY OPPOSITE K. THIS TXWY ONLY HAS RWY 13 SIDESTRIPES. IT HAS NO HOLD SHORT LINES FOR EITHER 13 OR FOR 16. IT HAS NO RWY SIDESTRIPES FOR RWY 16.
