Narrative:
On arrival into saf; abq approach instructed us that we may have to hold [at] the IAF for descent and arrival. A minute later we were instructed to hold north as published at the IAF poske. ATC then told us we may only have [to] do half turn in the hold. Approximately 3 minutes miles from poske ATC cleared us for the GPS approach runway 20. Since we were on a direct entry to the fix we assumed we were cleared straight in. Our altitude was fine. As we turned inbound ATC asked if we were doing a procedure turn. We said no. Then he cleared us straight in GPS 20. He asked if our altitude was ok and we said yes. The controller then said I'm not going to bust you or anything but to familiarize yourself with arrival procedure in the far:aim. We said sure thing and thank you. We landed without incident.ATC asked if we're doing the procedure turn. Instructions were confusing by ATC. We were starting a direct entry hold procedure when ATC then cleared us straight in for the GPS 20. I should have asked ATC if we may proceed straight in rather than assume the procedure turn hold was no longer needed.
