Narrative:
IFR night flight from sln to hut. Thunderstorm 10 west of hut. Flight uneventful until nearing salt (outer marker) for ILS hut when entered east edge of thunderstorm. Asked hut approach for 120 heading to east to exit storm. They gave it to me. I was somewhat rattled at this point. I asked for clearance to ict and was given same. Ict approach cleared me to ict VOR expect ILS back course to 19L. At the ict VOR I changed my mind, asked for ILS back course R31 at hut and was given same, to fly ict radial 325 to intercept. Intercepted back course ILS, broke out under clouds, circled to land 17 at hut. I believe everything that occurred was legal. However, I was so rattled by the thunderstorm, night and cockpit intermittent (lights) malfunctions that I wrestled the plane all over the sky -- 200' altitude fluctuations on at least 3 occasions and 20-30 degree heading changes. The plane had no WX or storm scope equipment and no DME. These things might have given me peace of mind to do a better job. Need to practice IFR more and do it earlier in day.

Narrative: IFR NIGHT FLT FROM SLN TO HUT. TSTM 10 W OF HUT. FLT UNEVENTFUL UNTIL NEARING SALT (OUTER MARKER) FOR ILS HUT WHEN ENTERED E EDGE OF TSTM. ASKED HUT APCH FOR 120 HDG TO E TO EXIT STORM. THEY GAVE IT TO ME. I WAS SOMEWHAT RATTLED AT THIS POINT. I ASKED FOR CLRNC TO ICT AND WAS GIVEN SAME. ICT APCH CLRED ME TO ICT VOR EXPECT ILS BACK COURSE TO 19L. HOWEVER, I WAS SO RATTLED BY THE TSTM, NIGHT AND COCKPIT INTERMITTENT (LIGHTS) MALFUNCTIONS THAT I WRESTLED THE PLANE ALL OVER THE SKY -- 200' ALT FLUCTUATIONS ON AT LEAST 3 OCCASIONS AND 20-30 DEG HDG CHANGES. THE PLANE HAD NO WX OR STORM SCOPE EQUIPMENT AND NO DME. THESE THINGS MIGHT HAVE GIVEN ME PEACE OF MIND TO DO A BETTER JOB. NEED TO PRACTICE IFR MORE AND DO IT EARLIER IN DAY.
