Narrative:
Initial clearance was to hold short of papa on taxiway alpha for departure on runway 35. While taxiing on alpha; requested higher than initial clearance of 3000 feet to avoid low altitude capture based on aircraft's relatively light weight. Checked in with tower frequency at papa intersection. Noted [air carrier] aircraft on left base turn to runway 35. First officer called ready for takeoff to tower. Tower then asked a business jet that was located on the parallel taxiway on the other side of 35 if they were ready for departure on runway 35. The business jet was not ready. Tower then issued a takeoff clearance to us; to include an amended initial altitude of 10000 (this created additional verbiage and a slight spike in workload for ATC and our internal communications). During this period of time; the [air carrier] aircraft had maneuvered onto final approach. Proceeded on alpha past papa to the uniform intersection of runway 35. Noted the [air carrier] aircraft on final. It appeared to be approximately 3.5 - 4.0 miles out (garmin indicated it was at 1100 feet). Prior to entering the runway; assessed the [air carrier] aircraft as being too close for us to proceed onto the runway. Stopped the aircraft prior to runway 35 on uniform; but past the hold short line. Communicated this status to tower. After a brief period of confusion; ATC instructed the [air carrier] aircraft to go-around. We were subsequently issued another takeoff clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757-200 flight crew reported being given takeoff clearance by ATC and felt that an Air Carrier aircraft on final to the same runway was too close and therefore held short of the runway; but past the Hold Short line. ATC issued a go-around to the Air Carrier on final.
