Narrative:
Landed on 13L at jfk. Turned off at za taxiway. Tower said 'taxi via the outer, contact ground.' I was unfamiliar with jfk and stopped to check taxi chart while first officer called ground. I surmised that, in order to reach the outer, we needed to turn right on ea and proceeded that way. (If we had continued straight to join the outer, we would pass the entrance to our ramp at F.) contacted ground, who said 'taxi to the ramp.' I took this to mean that we could use any route and continued on ea. I was not told to hold short of the helipad, nor to use caution for a helicopter. I was taxiing slowly and looking for other taxiing aircraft, but was not used to looking up for helicopter's while on the ground. Just short of the helipad, saw helicopter approaching form my right. Stopped and made the left turn onto the outer and right on F. Ground didn't say anything to me, but did say something to another company aircraft, which eh may have mistaken for me. I obviously will be more vigilant in looking for helicopter's in the future, but the whole thing would have been avoided if ground control had been more specific, or had issue a warning not to cross the helipad.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLOSE PROX ACR MLG TAXIING AND HELICOPTER APCHING THE HELIPAD AT JFK.
Narrative: LANDED ON 13L AT JFK. TURNED OFF AT ZA TXWY. TWR SAID 'TAXI VIA THE OUTER, CONTACT GND.' I WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH JFK AND STOPPED TO CHK TAXI CHART WHILE F/O CALLED GND. I SURMISED THAT, IN ORDER TO REACH THE OUTER, WE NEEDED TO TURN RIGHT ON EA AND PROCEEDED THAT WAY. (IF WE HAD CONTINUED STRAIGHT TO JOIN THE OUTER, WE WOULD PASS THE ENTRANCE TO OUR RAMP AT F.) CONTACTED GND, WHO SAID 'TAXI TO THE RAMP.' I TOOK THIS TO MEAN THAT WE COULD USE ANY RTE AND CONTINUED ON EA. I WAS NOT TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF THE HELIPAD, NOR TO USE CAUTION FOR A HELI. I WAS TAXIING SLOWLY AND LOOKING FOR OTHER TAXIING ACFT, BUT WAS NOT USED TO LOOKING UP FOR HELI'S WHILE ON THE GND. JUST SHORT OF THE HELIPAD, SAW HELI APCHING FORM MY RIGHT. STOPPED AND MADE THE LEFT TURN ONTO THE OUTER AND RIGHT ON F. GND DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING TO ME, BUT DID SAY SOMETHING TO ANOTHER COMPANY ACFT, WHICH EH MAY HAVE MISTAKEN FOR ME. I OBVIOUSLY WILL BE MORE VIGILANT IN LOOKING FOR HELI'S IN THE FUTURE, BUT THE WHOLE THING WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF GND CTL HAD BEEN MORE SPECIFIC, OR HAD ISSUE A WARNING NOT TO CROSS THE HELIPAD.
