Narrative:
I was cleared for stadium visibility 24R approach to lax. I turned base outside the freeway and descended toward 2000'. I turned final in the vicinity of the freeway and rolled out on track of runways 25. I had just rolled out when tower asked if I was correcting toward north runways. We said 'yes,' and corrected immediately. The problem arose because smog in area caused an inordinate amount of attention to looking for other aircraft, ground check pints and the runway. I was flying from left seat and most visibility cues were off to the right, so it was more difficult than if they were on left. Only a 2-M crew--configuring, changing frequencys, checklists all were being accomplished during base leg. Supplemental information from acn 139805: both the captain and I are not completely familiar with all the ground visibility cues and their locations. This contributed to the situation. We both had the 24R localizer tuned in but did not pay enough attention to the fact that we were left of course.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG ASSIGNED STADIUM 24R VISUAL APCH AT LAX TRIES TO LINE UP FOR WRONG RWY IN SMOGGY CONDITIONS.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED FOR STADIUM VIS 24R APCH TO LAX. I TURNED BASE OUTSIDE THE FREEWAY AND DSNDED TOWARD 2000'. I TURNED FINAL IN THE VICINITY OF THE FREEWAY AND ROLLED OUT ON TRACK OF RWYS 25. I HAD JUST ROLLED OUT WHEN TWR ASKED IF I WAS CORRECTING TOWARD N RWYS. WE SAID 'YES,' AND CORRECTED IMMEDIATELY. THE PROB AROSE BECAUSE SMOG IN AREA CAUSED AN INORDINATE AMOUNT OF ATTN TO LOOKING FOR OTHER ACFT, GND CHK PINTS AND THE RWY. I WAS FLYING FROM LEFT SEAT AND MOST VIS CUES WERE OFF TO THE RIGHT, SO IT WAS MORE DIFFICULT THAN IF THEY WERE ON LEFT. ONLY A 2-M CREW--CONFIGURING, CHANGING FREQS, CHKLISTS ALL WERE BEING ACCOMPLISHED DURING BASE LEG. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 139805: BOTH THE CAPT AND I ARE NOT COMPLETELY FAMILIAR WITH ALL THE GND VIS CUES AND THEIR LOCATIONS. THIS CONTRIBUTED TO THE SITUATION. WE BOTH HAD THE 24R LOC TUNED IN BUT DID NOT PAY ENOUGH ATTN TO THE FACT THAT WE WERE LEFT OF COURSE.
