Narrative:
I was approaching hum via tbd VOR for landing on IFR flight plan and cleared for ILS approach direct to hum. Upon clearance I was unable to receive hum reliably on ADF, but proceeded in apparent direction. When I did receive hum it appeared in a direction that I believed incorrect. I indicated to the tower to which I had been handed off that I was not sure of location. The tower shortly thereafter indicated radar approach told them I was outside parameter and to return to tbd VOR and contact approach. Upon returning to the VOR, I proceeded inbound on VOR approach as then authority/authorized and landed west/O further event. The cause was that I assumed the ADF would reliably pick up hum momentarily since I estimate I was less than 10-20 mi from it when I should have indicated I was not reliably receiving it. I was unfamiliar with southern la area. Refusing the direct routing at the time of issuance would have prevented the problem.

Title: SMA PLT ON IFR APCH NOT SURE OF LOCATION. TWR SAID APCH INDICATED 'OUTSIDE PARAMETERS,' RETURN TO VOR CONTACT APCH.
Narrative: I WAS APCHING HUM VIA TBD VOR FOR LNDG ON IFR FLT PLAN AND CLRED FOR ILS APCH DIRECT TO HUM. UPON CLRNC I WAS UNABLE TO RECEIVE HUM RELIABLY ON ADF, BUT PROCEEDED IN APPARENT DIRECTION. WHEN I DID RECEIVE HUM IT APPEARED IN A DIRECTION THAT I BELIEVED INCORRECT. I INDICATED TO THE TWR TO WHICH I HAD BEEN HANDED OFF THAT I WAS NOT SURE OF LOCATION. THE TWR SHORTLY THEREAFTER INDICATED RADAR APCH TOLD THEM I WAS OUTSIDE PARAMETER AND TO RETURN TO TBD VOR AND CONTACT APCH. UPON RETURNING TO THE VOR, I PROCEEDED INBND ON VOR APCH AS THEN AUTH AND LANDED W/O FURTHER EVENT. THE CAUSE WAS THAT I ASSUMED THE ADF WOULD RELIABLY PICK UP HUM MOMENTARILY SINCE I ESTIMATE I WAS LESS THAN 10-20 MI FROM IT WHEN I SHOULD HAVE INDICATED I WAS NOT RELIABLY RECEIVING IT.
