Narrative:
I was the pilot of small aircraft and was returning from fmy, flying VFR and started descending from 8500' MSL 50 NM south of the vhp VOR approximately 45 NM south of ind, intending to descend to 1700' MSL arriving at that altitude before entering the arsa and flying west of pully (LOM for runway 5) for a landing at 3SY. Pilot underestimated his position and ground speed. Contributing factor: wind (also pilot had head up). How it was discovered: the problem was discovered when pilot looked out right window and saw ind. Corrective actions: pilot turned west and descended more rapidly. Looking for departing aircraft and listening to departure control.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ARSA PENETRATION WOC.
Narrative: I WAS THE PLT OF SMA AND WAS RETURNING FROM FMY, FLYING VFR AND STARTED DSNDING FROM 8500' MSL 50 NM S OF THE VHP VOR APPROX 45 NM S OF IND, INTENDING TO DSND TO 1700' MSL ARRIVING AT THAT ALT BEFORE ENTERING THE ARSA AND FLYING W OF PULLY (LOM FOR RWY 5) FOR A LNDG AT 3SY. PLT UNDERESTIMATED HIS POS AND GND SPD. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR: WIND (ALSO PLT HAD HEAD UP). HOW IT WAS DISCOVERED: THE PROB WAS DISCOVERED WHEN PLT LOOKED OUT RIGHT WINDOW AND SAW IND. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: PLT TURNED W AND DSNDED MORE RAPIDLY. LOOKING FOR DEPARTING ACFT AND LISTENING TO DEP CTL.
