Narrative:

During pushback from gate captain told the tug driver that the, 'brakes were released, cleared to push.' the brakes were in fact not released and when the tug pushed, it ripped and bent backward the vertical nose gear strut. As a result, the aft sustained extensive damage which was subsequently repaired. The 15 passenger and crew members then left the aircraft normally via the main cabin door. No injuries! On the panel there are no lights or indications to show you if the brakes are set or not. The only way to tell if they're set is for the captain to press down on the brake pedals and/or reach to his left to feel if the brake handle is slightly elevated. Neither one of these options was exercised.
