Narrative:
When at cruise altitude FL340 about 100 miles south of asivo; encountered a small pocket of what I would describe as severe turbulence. The aircraft lost about 500 feet and [experienced] about 5-8 knots overspeed. The flight attendants were told to sit down immediately. After the aircraft was in full control and out of the turbulence I called back to check on the flight attendants. One of them got injured from a galley cart coming off the floor and landing on her foot. She put it on ice for the remainder of the flight and was able to walk off the aircraft.
