Narrative:
The generator function of the APU was on MEL. We were starting the number 2 engine at the gate. During engine start; the first officer's mfd went blank and lots of smoke started coming out from under the instrument panel glareshield and filled the cockpit. We aborted the engine start and opened the cockpit door and told the flight attendant we need to evacuate. She opened the main cabin door and the rampers put the boarding bridge in place. All passengers deplaned rapidly from the main cabin door and went inside the terminal. We completed the emergency evacuation checklist and I went inside to call the fire department. They; along with maintenance; inspected the aircraft while I communicated with the company and operations. We eventually gathered our belongings and went to another gate/aircraft to complete our scheduled flight.the crew worked together as we are trained to do. Our flight attendant did an outstanding job of keeping everybody calm during an exciting event!
