Narrative:

I was taking off on 28R at montgomery-gibbs executive airport and when turning crosswind once I hit 1000 feet I encountered an aircraft that was coming in at the 45 degree angle for the downwind leg. I then diverted left and contacted tower and asked if this aircraft was coming into the pattern. They said yes and that I turned too early. I had turned within 300 feet of traffic pattern altitude at the end of the runway. Because of safety concerns I turned possibly too early within half mile from the runway.
