Narrative:
We were cleared to enter the phx TCA and continue. Straight in, for runway 8R. I had a brand new first officer with me and I was kept quite busy between flying the aircraft and monitoring his radio work. We never heard approach control tell us to contact the tower--and I never did. I was too busy and too distracted. Once we were on the ground (no clearance to land) I realized that we hadn't talked to the tower or been cleared to land. Ground control asked if I had heard phx tower clear me to land. Of course, I said yes. No other comments were made. I have been very frustrated with the pilot training and the low-time pilots that I have been flying with. We have been flying in a high density, high pressure environment and I definitely feel that this operation should not be a training school for 300 hour pilots. This is too much going on and I need assistance, not distraction.
