Narrative:
We were cleared for takeoff from mynn runway 14 and told to maintain runway heading to 4000' and to contact departure when airborne. After takeoff and through 3500' the crew noticed traffic off the right wing (an small aircraft) 400-600' level at 4000'. Apparently said traffic took off before us and we rapidly overtook it. Neither the tower controller nor the departure controller advised us of the location of the traffic. When questioned, the departure controller mentioned that the tower controller should have advised us of the traffic. In a high density area with a mixture of IFR, VFR, low performance and high performance aircraft, vigilance on the part of all parties concerned is imperative!

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF FROM MYNN RWY 14 AND TOLD TO MAINTAIN RWY HDG TO 4000' AND TO CONTACT DEP WHEN AIRBORNE. AFTER TKOF AND THROUGH 3500' THE CREW NOTICED TFC OFF THE RIGHT WING (AN SMA) 400-600' LEVEL AT 4000'. APPARENTLY SAID TFC TOOK OFF BEFORE US AND WE RAPIDLY OVERTOOK IT. NEITHER THE TWR CTLR NOR THE DEP CTLR ADVISED US OF THE LOCATION OF THE TFC. WHEN QUESTIONED, THE DEP CTLR MENTIONED THAT THE TWR CTLR SHOULD HAVE ADVISED US OF THE TFC. IN A HIGH DENSITY AREA WITH A MIXTURE OF IFR, VFR, LOW PERFORMANCE AND HIGH PERFORMANCE ACFT, VIGILANCE ON THE PART OF ALL PARTIES CONCERNED IS IMPERATIVE!
