Narrative:
I was in a left traffic pattern at air driven generator for runway 23. I had entered downwind at a 45 degree angle from the south at 1600' and reported entering a left downwind for runway 23. Earlier, I had heard an small aircraft call from 8 mi south inbound for landing. The transmission was made by a woman but a man's voice in backgnd was heard correcting her on location. I heard no further transmission from the small aircraft. When I was directly across from the runway numbers I saw a plane land and assumed it was the small aircraft. I did not hear or see any other traffic in the pattern. As I was turning base to final I saw an small aircraft Y directly in front of me about 50' above me and 200' in front of me. I wasn't sure the plane intended to land as it was high, appeared to level off above end of runway. I felt the possibility was great the plane would not land and thought a go around would be more dangerous than landing. I landed to the right of the runway in the grass, small aircraft Y landed to the left of the runway. I touched down first and was behind small aircraft Y by about 25' when they touched down. The small aircraft Y pilot should have been transmitting position especially on such a long final. As the operator of a low wing plane I could have made a wider pattern thereby making a longer base and more time to check for traffic on final.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BETWEEN TWO SMA'S AT UNCONTROLLED ARPT.
Narrative: I WAS IN A LEFT TFC PATTERN AT ADG FOR RWY 23. I HAD ENTERED DOWNWIND AT A 45 DEG ANGLE FROM THE S AT 1600' AND RPTED ENTERING A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 23. EARLIER, I HAD HEARD AN SMA CALL FROM 8 MI S INBND FOR LNDG. THE XMISSION WAS MADE BY A WOMAN BUT A MAN'S VOICE IN BACKGND WAS HEARD CORRECTING HER ON LOCATION. I HEARD NO FURTHER XMISSION FROM THE SMA. WHEN I WAS DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM THE RWY NUMBERS I SAW A PLANE LAND AND ASSUMED IT WAS THE SMA. I DID NOT HEAR OR SEE ANY OTHER TFC IN THE PATTERN. AS I WAS TURNING BASE TO FINAL I SAW AN SMA Y DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME ABOUT 50' ABOVE ME AND 200' IN FRONT OF ME. I WASN'T SURE THE PLANE INTENDED TO LAND AS IT WAS HIGH, APPEARED TO LEVEL OFF ABOVE END OF RWY. I FELT THE POSSIBILITY WAS GREAT THE PLANE WOULD NOT LAND AND THOUGHT A GO AROUND WOULD BE MORE DANGEROUS THAN LNDG. I LANDED TO THE R OF THE RWY IN THE GRASS, SMA Y LANDED TO THE L OF THE RWY. I TOUCHED DOWN FIRST AND WAS BEHIND SMA Y BY ABOUT 25' WHEN THEY TOUCHED DOWN. THE SMA Y PLT SHOULD HAVE BEEN XMITTING POS ESPECIALLY ON SUCH A LONG FINAL. AS THE OPERATOR OF A LOW WING PLANE I COULD HAVE MADE A WIDER PATTERN THEREBY MAKING A LONGER BASE AND MORE TIME TO CHK FOR TFC ON FINAL.
