Narrative:

Just after a touch-and-go off runway 31, I reentered the pattern with intentions of another touch-and-go. Because I heard no communications from his aircraft, I was unaware that he was in the pattern until later, when I saw him. I was flying at the normal traffic pattern altitude at 800 ft, within the boundaries of the traffic pattern area. It wasn't until after I called crosswind, left downwind and left base, that I saw his aircraft about 5 mi from the airport at about 1300 ft. As I was getting deeper into my base leg, I had the aircraft in sight but was still unaware of his intentions. There was a lot of traffic and because of his position and altitude, I thought he might be just flying low by the airport. Not until after I called and turned final, did I realize I had cut somebody off. I was made aware of my mistake by mr. X. In the first communications I heard by him, he said, 'pilot in an small aircraft X do you realize you just cut off an small aircraft Y?' I replied with a simple, 'I'm sorry, I never heard you call final.' being nervous about making this mistake, I was ready to land on runway 31. After a rougher than normal landing, my concentration again was broken by small aircraft Y flying 50-100 ft off the right side of runway 31/13. I then came to the conclusion this was the aircraft that I had mistakenly cut off on final. At this point a shaky voice took over our CTAF and said small aircraft X, I am off your right wing, do you see me? I replied that I did see him and proceeded with my touch- and-go and climbed to 500 ft. Beside me the whole time was small aircraft Y. As I was turning out crosswind the small aircraft Y flight movements became erratic and threatening. He had jumped up a couple hundred ft when he proceeded to turn right over my aircraft to establish his downwind. At this point on downwind I had the small aircraft Y in sight at about 300 ft in front of me at 11 O'clock. Totally nervous at this point I was ready to exit the pattern to the south to collect myself and let traffic clear. Right about where you would turn base for runway 31, in a normal pattern, is where mr. X slowed his aircraft down considerably to get precariously close to me. It was now that he said, what are you doing so close to my aircraft? I said that I was exiting the pattern. After further abuse over the CTAF by mr. X I told him we would talk about this on the ground. When I met mr. X he used a very hostile tone to inform me of his position at magazine, and to lecture me not letting me or anyone else a word in edgewise. After he stormed off, I tried to approach him again to rectify the situation. Instead of clearing the air, I was promised to be published in his magazine 'in a very negative way.' the whole situation could have been avoided if mr. X would have aborted his first non-communicated attempt to land on runway 31 and returned back into the pattern in a respectful manner. I just wanted to let you know my side of the story, in case a situation arises. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter stated that he was never able to properly communicate to the other aircraft pilot who continued to threaten him with abusive language and not clarify where he was in the traffic pattern at the time he was cut off on final. In addition, witnesses agreed with the reporter in that the other pilot was completely out of line in the irrational manner in which he acted and continued to act. They (witnesses) thought that the other pilot was attempting to get information for an aviation article for his magazine. At no time did the reporter or witnesses see the other pilot enter the prescribed traffic pattern prior to being 'cut off' on final approach. They all believed that other pilot was making a long straight in approach and had not given position advisories over the CTAF unicom frequency.

Title: NMAC BTWN 2 SMA SEL ACFT IN THE TFC PATTERN OF AN UNCTLED ARPT.

Narrative: JUST AFTER A TOUCH-AND-GO OFF RWY 31, I REENTERED THE PATTERN WITH INTENTIONS OF ANOTHER TOUCH-AND-GO. BECAUSE I HEARD NO COMS FROM HIS ACFT, I WAS UNAWARE THAT HE WAS IN THE PATTERN UNTIL LATER, WHEN I SAW HIM. I WAS FLYING AT THE NORMAL TFC PATTERN ALT AT 800 FT, WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF THE TFC PATTERN AREA. IT WASN'T UNTIL AFTER I CALLED XWIND, L DOWNWIND AND L BASE, THAT I SAW HIS ACFT ABOUT 5 MI FROM THE ARPT AT ABOUT 1300 FT. AS I WAS GETTING DEEPER INTO MY BASE LEG, I HAD THE ACFT IN SIGHT BUT WAS STILL UNAWARE OF HIS INTENTIONS. THERE WAS A LOT OF TFC AND BECAUSE OF HIS POS AND ALT, I THOUGHT HE MIGHT BE JUST FLYING LOW BY THE ARPT. NOT UNTIL AFTER I CALLED AND TURNED FINAL, DID I REALIZE I HAD CUT SOMEBODY OFF. I WAS MADE AWARE OF MY MISTAKE BY MR. X. IN THE FIRST COMS I HEARD BY HIM, HE SAID, 'PLT IN AN SMA X DO YOU REALIZE YOU JUST CUT OFF AN SMA Y?' I REPLIED WITH A SIMPLE, 'I'M SORRY, I NEVER HEARD YOU CALL FINAL.' BEING NERVOUS ABOUT MAKING THIS MISTAKE, I WAS READY TO LAND ON RWY 31. AFTER A ROUGHER THAN NORMAL LNDG, MY CONCENTRATION AGAIN WAS BROKEN BY SMA Y FLYING 50-100 FT OFF THE R SIDE OF RWY 31/13. I THEN CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THIS WAS THE ACFT THAT I HAD MISTAKENLY CUT OFF ON FINAL. AT THIS POINT A SHAKY VOICE TOOK OVER OUR CTAF AND SAID SMA X, I AM OFF YOUR R WING, DO YOU SEE ME? I REPLIED THAT I DID SEE HIM AND PROCEEDED WITH MY TOUCH- AND-GO AND CLBED TO 500 FT. BESIDE ME THE WHOLE TIME WAS SMA Y. AS I WAS TURNING OUT XWIND THE SMA Y FLT MOVEMENTS BECAME ERRATIC AND THREATENING. HE HAD JUMPED UP A COUPLE HUNDRED FT WHEN HE PROCEEDED TO TURN RIGHT OVER MY ACFT TO ESTABLISH HIS DOWNWIND. AT THIS POINT ON DOWNWIND I HAD THE SMA Y IN SIGHT AT ABOUT 300 FT IN FRONT OF ME AT 11 O'CLOCK. TOTALLY NERVOUS AT THIS POINT I WAS READY TO EXIT THE PATTERN TO THE S TO COLLECT MYSELF AND LET TFC CLR. RIGHT ABOUT WHERE YOU WOULD TURN BASE FOR RWY 31, IN A NORMAL PATTERN, IS WHERE MR. X SLOWED HIS ACFT DOWN CONSIDERABLY TO GET PRECARIOUSLY CLOSE TO ME. IT WAS NOW THAT HE SAID, WHAT ARE YOU DOING SO CLOSE TO MY ACFT? I SAID THAT I WAS EXITING THE PATTERN. AFTER FURTHER ABUSE OVER THE CTAF BY MR. X I TOLD HIM WE WOULD TALK ABOUT THIS ON THE GND. WHEN I MET MR. X HE USED A VERY HOSTILE TONE TO INFORM ME OF HIS POS AT MAGAZINE, AND TO LECTURE ME NOT LETTING ME OR ANYONE ELSE A WORD IN EDGEWISE. AFTER HE STORMED OFF, I TRIED TO APPROACH HIM AGAIN TO RECTIFY THE SIT. INSTEAD OF CLRING THE AIR, I WAS PROMISED TO BE PUBLISHED IN HIS MAGAZINE 'IN A VERY NEGATIVE WAY.' THE WHOLE SIT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF MR. X WOULD HAVE ABORTED HIS FIRST NON-COMMUNICATED ATTEMPT TO LAND ON RWY 31 AND RETURNED BACK INTO THE PATTERN IN A RESPECTFUL MANNER. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW MY SIDE OF THE STORY, IN CASE A SIT ARISES. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH REPORTER REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR STATED THAT HE WAS NEVER ABLE TO PROPERLY COMMUNICATE TO THE OTHER ACFT PLT WHO CONTINUED TO THREATEN HIM WITH ABUSIVE LANGUAGE AND NOT CLARIFY WHERE HE WAS IN THE TFC PATTERN AT THE TIME HE WAS CUT OFF ON FINAL. IN ADDITION, WITNESSES AGREED WITH THE RPTR IN THAT THE OTHER PLT WAS COMPLETELY OUT OF LINE IN THE IRRATIONAL MANNER IN WHICH HE ACTED AND CONTINUED TO ACT. THEY (WITNESSES) THOUGHT THAT THE OTHER PLT WAS ATTEMPTING TO GET INFO FOR AN AVIATION ARTICLE FOR HIS MAGAZINE. AT NO TIME DID THE RPTR OR WITNESSES SEE THE OTHER PLT ENTER THE PRESCRIBED TFC PATTERN PRIOR TO BEING 'CUT OFF' ON FINAL APCH. THEY ALL BELIEVED THAT OTHER PLT WAS MAKING A LONG STRAIGHT IN APCH AND HAD NOT GIVEN POS ADVISORIES OVER THE CTAF UNICOM FREQ.
