Narrative:

2 planes in cruise flight approached a point of land from opposite directions -- both claiming to have made their position calls -- neither hearing the other. Neither plane illegal or at fault. Both planes engaged in average awareness flying found themselves with a 3 second response time to an near midair collision -- 100 ft of separation. Conclusion: average awareness is not good enough. Pilots need constant wake-up calls as to the seriousness of what they are doing.
