Narrative:
I was on downwind leg for the stadium visibility approach for the right runway at lax. I believe it was 24R. The controller kept us up high due to traffic, and we were asked to maintain 250 KTS. When I was finally given a descent I was also given a turn to 190 degrees, which cut the corner short. I used speed brake and I was slowing the aircraft down in order to land when the controller called out medium large transport traffic landing on the left side. Because speed was still in the 250 KT range, my turning radius was larger than what the controller and I anticipated. I picked up the medium large transport traffic and flew my turn in order to avoid a conflict with him. As a result when I completed my turn I picked up the left side runway and saw that I was now between the four runways. I immediately corrected back to the right side and landed normally. Although I came uncomfortably close to the medium large transport, I in no way felt we were in a dangerous condition. The reduced sep at this airport could in fact cause a problem when you have one aircraft turning toward another, as in this approach. The unusually reduced sep at lax is uncomfortable for someone who has never seen the stadium visibility approach.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TRACK DEVIATION. AR MLG ON VISUAL APCH OVERSHOT TURN TO FINAL AND CONFLICTED WITH TRAFFIC ON PARALLEL RWY APCH.
Narrative: I WAS ON DOWNWIND LEG FOR THE STADIUM VIS APCH FOR THE RIGHT RWY AT LAX. I BELIEVE IT WAS 24R. THE CTLR KEPT US UP HIGH DUE TO TFC, AND WE WERE ASKED TO MAINTAIN 250 KTS. WHEN I WAS FINALLY GIVEN A DSNT I WAS ALSO GIVEN A TURN TO 190 DEGS, WHICH CUT THE CORNER SHORT. I USED SPD BRAKE AND I WAS SLOWING THE ACFT DOWN IN ORDER TO LAND WHEN THE CTLR CALLED OUT MLG TFC LNDG ON THE LEFT SIDE. BECAUSE SPD WAS STILL IN THE 250 KT RANGE, MY TURNING RADIUS WAS LARGER THAN WHAT THE CTLR AND I ANTICIPATED. I PICKED UP THE MLG TFC AND FLEW MY TURN IN ORDER TO AVOID A CONFLICT WITH HIM. AS A RESULT WHEN I COMPLETED MY TURN I PICKED UP THE LEFT SIDE RWY AND SAW THAT I WAS NOW BTWN THE FOUR RWYS. I IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED BACK TO THE RIGHT SIDE AND LANDED NORMALLY. ALTHOUGH I CAME UNCOMFORTABLY CLOSE TO THE MLG, I IN NO WAY FELT WE WERE IN A DANGEROUS CONDITION. THE REDUCED SEP AT THIS ARPT COULD IN FACT CAUSE A PROB WHEN YOU HAVE ONE ACFT TURNING TOWARD ANOTHER, AS IN THIS APCH. THE UNUSUALLY REDUCED SEP AT LAX IS UNCOMFORTABLE FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER SEEN THE STADIUM VIS APCH.
