Narrative:
While being vectored for a visibility to 18R we were asked if an air carrier Y aircraft at 1 O'clock position and 2.5 mi was in sight. We answered affirmatively for aircraft and airport. Approach then cleared us for a visibility to 18R, follow traffic and maintain 180 KTS to marker. Aircraft appeared to have gear down and slowing, so we did same. Because of close proximity, crew agreed that if air carrier Y was not off runway by 200' altitude (our aircraft), we would execute a missed approach. Air carrier Y had not cleared, so go around was initiated. We vectored for a visibility to 17L. Rest of flight was uneventful. Controller trying to sequence aircraft too closely. An aircraft behind us had to break off and land on 18L.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG ON SHORT FINAL AT DFW FEELS TOO CLOSE TO LNDG TRAFFIC AHEAD AND INITIATES A GO AROUND.
Narrative: WHILE BEING VECTORED FOR A VIS TO 18R WE WERE ASKED IF AN ACR Y ACFT AT 1 O'CLOCK POS AND 2.5 MI WAS IN SIGHT. WE ANSWERED AFFIRMATIVELY FOR ACFT AND ARPT. APCH THEN CLRED US FOR A VIS TO 18R, FOLLOW TFC AND MAINTAIN 180 KTS TO MARKER. ACFT APPEARED TO HAVE GEAR DOWN AND SLOWING, SO WE DID SAME. BECAUSE OF CLOSE PROX, CREW AGREED THAT IF ACR Y WAS NOT OFF RWY BY 200' ALT (OUR ACFT), WE WOULD EXECUTE A MISSED APCH. ACR Y HAD NOT CLRED, SO GAR WAS INITIATED. WE VECTORED FOR A VIS TO 17L. REST OF FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. CTLR TRYING TO SEQUENCE ACFT TOO CLOSELY. AN ACFT BEHIND US HAD TO BREAK OFF AND LAND ON 18L.
