Narrative:
Radar controller trnee had been on sector for about 2 hours of fairly complex traffic. Just as he was being relieved, he cleared a light transport X through the altitude of a nearly head-on light transport Y. Aircraft were too close to make descent west/O losing sep. Error was detected too late to correct. C/a never flashed.

Title: LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION OCCURRED BETWEEN 2 ACFT UNDER THE CTL OF ATC.
Narrative: RADAR CTLR TRNEE HAD BEEN ON SECTOR FOR ABOUT 2 HRS OF FAIRLY COMPLEX TFC. JUST AS HE WAS BEING RELIEVED, HE CLRED A LTT X THROUGH THE ALT OF A NEARLY HEAD-ON LTT Y. ACFT WERE TOO CLOSE TO MAKE DSNT W/O LOSING SEP. ERROR WAS DETECTED TOO LATE TO CORRECT. C/A NEVER FLASHED.
