Narrative:
I landed at perry-warsaw, ny, airport, which was supposedly closed. There was no NOTAM with buffalo FSS when contacted at xx:25 pm same day and I did not see an 'X' on the field and no mention of airport being closed when I idented I was approaching perry-warsaw for landing downwind for runway 10. Radio frequency used was 122.8. Upon landing we were approached by an FAA official from the rochester, ny, FSDO who advised me I landed at a closed airport. In talking with other pilots at the airport, they advised me the 'X' was blown away by a previously departing aircraft. Passenger and pilot also did not notice any 'X' at either end of runways. Corrective actions. I should have been advised when announcing my intensions to land at airport, that it was closed. Buffalo FSS was unaware of any 'NOTAM' when contacted at xx:25 pm, 5/90. The airport should have been adequately marked, as to it being closed. 'NOTAM' process should be revamped as it does not fully support the general aviation pilot. Such as it is, all pilots should check NOTAMS before going to any pancake breakfast fly-in. Narrative description continued. Upon calling buffalo FSS tuesday, 5/90, the attendant could not find NOTAM and then turned me over to supervisor. Supervisor then stated there was a NOTAM, and personally cancelled xx:20 pm sunday, 5/90. Upon asking for recording of NOTAM being given out, he said they will not start recordings until they move to new offices. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Other fly-in pilots told me the cloth X on the runway had been blown away by the aerobatic aircraft that took off just ahead of my landing. I have an appointment with the FAA inspector later this month to discuss the NOTAM situation, but insector had advised me no violation is being prosecuted.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF PVT SMA LANDED ON RWY NOTAMED CLOSED FOR 30 MINUTES FOR AEROBATIC SHOW AT BREAKFAST FLY IN.
Narrative: I LANDED AT PERRY-WARSAW, NY, ARPT, WHICH WAS SUPPOSEDLY CLOSED. THERE WAS NO NOTAM WITH BUFFALO FSS WHEN CONTACTED AT XX:25 PM SAME DAY AND I DID NOT SEE AN 'X' ON THE FIELD AND NO MENTION OF ARPT BEING CLOSED WHEN I IDENTED I WAS APCHING PERRY-WARSAW FOR LNDG DOWNWIND FOR RWY 10. RADIO FREQ USED WAS 122.8. UPON LNDG WE WERE APCHED BY AN FAA OFFICIAL FROM THE ROCHESTER, NY, FSDO WHO ADVISED ME I LANDED AT A CLOSED ARPT. IN TALKING WITH OTHER PLTS AT THE ARPT, THEY ADVISED ME THE 'X' WAS BLOWN AWAY BY A PREVIOUSLY DEPARTING ACFT. PAX AND PLT ALSO DID NOT NOTICE ANY 'X' AT EITHER END OF RWYS. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADVISED WHEN ANNOUNCING MY INTENSIONS TO LAND AT ARPT, THAT IT WAS CLOSED. BUFFALO FSS WAS UNAWARE OF ANY 'NOTAM' WHEN CONTACTED AT XX:25 PM, 5/90. THE ARPT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADEQUATELY MARKED, AS TO IT BEING CLOSED. 'NOTAM' PROCESS SHOULD BE REVAMPED AS IT DOES NOT FULLY SUPPORT THE GENERAL AVIATION PLT. SUCH AS IT IS, ALL PLTS SHOULD CHK NOTAMS BEFORE GOING TO ANY PANCAKE BREAKFAST FLY-IN. NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION CONTINUED. UPON CALLING BUFFALO FSS TUESDAY, 5/90, THE ATTENDANT COULD NOT FIND NOTAM AND THEN TURNED ME OVER TO SUPVR. SUPVR THEN STATED THERE WAS A NOTAM, AND PERSONALLY CANCELLED XX:20 PM SUNDAY, 5/90. UPON ASKING FOR RECORDING OF NOTAM BEING GIVEN OUT, HE SAID THEY WILL NOT START RECORDINGS UNTIL THEY MOVE TO NEW OFFICES. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. OTHER FLY-IN PLTS TOLD ME THE CLOTH X ON THE RWY HAD BEEN BLOWN AWAY BY THE AEROBATIC ACFT THAT TOOK OFF JUST AHEAD OF MY LNDG. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE FAA INSPECTOR LATER THIS MONTH TO DISCUSS THE NOTAM SITUATION, BUT INSECTOR HAD ADVISED ME NO VIOLATION IS BEING PROSECUTED.
