Narrative:
I was giving the first officer his initial operating experience on the medium large transport. He was landing on runway 17L (dfw). Winds were 180 degree/18 KTS, gust to 24 KTS. I believe he had 'target fixation' at the T/D spot (my analysis in retrospect). As we descended below 20' he suddenly banked the airplane sharply to the right and I initiated recovery to the left. He was still on the controls and I yelled 'I've got it' as the left wing was going down. He let go of the yoke and I initiated leveling the wings and making the landing. We scraped the left wing landing light. The first officer had not made a good landing during the previous 3 days of IOE. As I said earlier, I believe he has developed a habit of staring at the T/D point to the exclusion of the entire runway and landing picture. He had been briefed about this during the prior 2 days of IOE. Supplemental information from acn 146736. We were unaware that any damage had occurred, we got off the aircraft in dfw and the next crew found the broken light.

Title: FO SCRAPED THE LEFT LNDG LIGHT ON A MLG AT DFW IN A GUSTY CROSSWIND.
Narrative: I WAS GIVING THE F/O HIS INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE ON THE MLG. HE WAS LNDG ON RWY 17L (DFW). WINDS WERE 180 DEG/18 KTS, GUST TO 24 KTS. I BELIEVE HE HAD 'TARGET FIXATION' AT THE T/D SPOT (MY ANALYSIS IN RETROSPECT). AS WE DSNDED BELOW 20' HE SUDDENLY BANKED THE AIRPLANE SHARPLY TO THE R AND I INITIATED RECOVERY TO THE L. HE WAS STILL ON THE CTLS AND I YELLED 'I'VE GOT IT' AS THE L WING WAS GOING DOWN. HE LET GO OF THE YOKE AND I INITIATED LEVELING THE WINGS AND MAKING THE LNDG. WE SCRAPED THE L WING LNDG LIGHT. THE F/O HAD NOT MADE A GOOD LNDG DURING THE PREVIOUS 3 DAYS OF IOE. AS I SAID EARLIER, I BELIEVE HE HAS DEVELOPED A HABIT OF STARING AT THE T/D POINT TO THE EXCLUSION OF THE ENTIRE RWY AND LNDG PICTURE. HE HAD BEEN BRIEFED ABOUT THIS DURING THE PRIOR 2 DAYS OF IOE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 146736. WE WERE UNAWARE THAT ANY DAMAGE HAD OCCURRED, WE GOT OFF THE ACFT IN DFW AND THE NEXT CREW FOUND THE BROKEN LIGHT.
